We dropped in on the delightful Jim Chalmers in Christchurch. Jim emailed me a while back saying he was making me a weather vane in the shape of a Concorde and asked if someone would swing by and collect it on my behalf. Picking it up in person seemed a much better idea. Jim treated us to a tour of his garden and morning coffee with his speciality lemon icing filled yo-yos. My aluminum Concorde has G-Heln on its tail (short for Go Helen, says Philip) and will soon grace our garden.

Timaru’s Theatre Royal is a precious gem. Thank heavens it has survived and been looked after so well.

Theatre Royal manager Alan Shaw tutored our daughter Katharine in the arts of theatre lighting. With his guidance she did the lighting for the show – and now she’s hooked!
